The Artist Project

The past weekend TheArtistProject, a juried art exhibition, took over the Better Living Centre at Exhibition place.  Row upon row of beautifully realized artwork filled the cavernous space.   The work varied in subject and medium, at times pushing the limits of the concept explored, each artist there representing themselves.  The emerging artist category supports the development of emerging artists through the juried Untapped Emerging Artists competition. It awards artists a FREE space at the exhibition, and is an opportunity for artists to participate in a professional-level art fair and showcase their work to gallerists, collectors and art enthusiasts at no cost!  Submissions to this fair begin in September of each year.

Art Toronto

Image

This work titled Miss America by Kent Monkman was one of the many works to take over the Toronto Convention Centre this weekend at the annual Art Fair titled Art Toronto.  Galleries from Toronto and around the world took over the North Building to put on a very fine show. Sales seemed to be brisk as the exhibit on Friday was very different from that on Sunday.  As work was sold, new work was put up!  Much of the work seemed very accessible with the recent return to illustrative visualizing in paint and manipulated photos.  While most of the work was by established artists, there was some effort to show emerging artists with RBC’s annual painting competition on display.

The Focus on Asia was a large curated exhibition of Asian Artists who were chosen or worked within a theme of Beyond Geography, commenting on the duality that exists when so much of the world is not exclusively connected to one culture.  Works on paper, video and porcelain plates created an intriguing cross-section.

Throughout the entire show, artists were pushing the limits on how and what to display with a large range of materials, surfaces and combinations thereof.  The best year yet for Art Toronto!

Seneca Illustration grad takes artistic talent to the street!

Image

A recent graduate of Independent Illustration, Marina Siu-Chong, was hand-picked to develop this year’s artwork by the organizers of the 2012 Word On the Street Festival. Her colourful painting of two pigeons surrounded by stacks of books is featured on posters, ads and online. The artwork took Marina one night to develop and was painted entirely in Photoshop.

Marina currently works as an artist at Indie Stone Studios, a company she co-founded after graduating from Seneca.

The Word On The Street is a national celebration of literacy and the written word. Each September, in communities coast to coast, the public is invited to participate in hundreds of author events, presentations and workshops and to browse a marketplace that boasts the best selection of Canadian books and magazines.

Happy September!

It still feels like summer outside, but it is back to school and work inside! The hallways are bustling with students and faculty alike, with the anticipation of a great semester ahead. In Illustration, we have one new faculty to welcome, Martha Newbigging, who will be teaching the Children’s Illustration course in 3rd semester. She comes to us with rich experience both as an accomplished children’s book illustrator and teacher as well!  She has taught in far off lands where the facilities are not as equipped as Seneca, and this experience served her well for when she showed up to teach her first class and rolled calmly with the first week computer glitches!

Here’s to a great semester ahead!
